Intent
At Wheatfield, we believe that some of the most memorable and meaningful learning happens beyond the four walls of the classroom. Our outdoor learning curriculum is designed to nurture curious, confident and resilient learners who develop a deep connection with the natural world. Through purposeful outdoor experiences, we aim to promote wellbeing, creativity, teamwork, problem-solving and independence while enriching and enhancing the wider curriculum.
We want every child to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to explore, take managed risks, overcome challenges and understand their responsibility as stewards of the environment. Outdoor learning provides opportunities for children to build character, perseverance and a lifelong appreciation of the world around them.
Implementation
Outdoor learning is carefully planned and embedded within our curriculum from Nursery through to Year 6. Children regularly access outdoor environments to support learning across a range of subjects, including science, geography, maths, English, art and physical development.
Our programme combines curriculum-based learning with opportunities for exploration, investigation and practical application. Children work collaboratively to solve problems, build shelters, conduct scientific enquiries, develop mapping skills, create artwork inspired by nature and engage in environmental projects. Sessions encourage children to take ownership of their learning, ask questions and develop resilience through hands-on experiences.
Our outdoor provision is led by skilled staff who ensure activities are inclusive, engaging and appropriately challenging. Learning is adapted to meet the needs of all pupils, enabling every child to experience success and develop confidence in the outdoors.
Impact
Outdoor learning has a lasting impact on our pupils' academic, social and emotional development. Children develop greater resilience, independence and self-confidence as they tackle new experiences and challenges. They learn to work effectively as part of a team, communicate thoughtfully and persevere when faced with difficulties.
We see increased engagement, curiosity and motivation across the curriculum, alongside improvements in problem-solving, oracy and critical thinking skills. Outdoor learning also supports pupils' wellbeing by providing opportunities to be active, build positive relationships and develop a sense of belonging and connection with nature.
As a result, our children leave Wheatfield as confident, capable and environmentally aware young people who are equipped with the skills, attitudes and experiences they need to thrive both in school and beyond.
