Mobile Phones
The Department for Education guidance on mobile phones in schools became a legal requirement under the Children's Wellbeing and Schools Act in June 2026. At Wheatfield Primary School & Nursery, we want everyone to feel safe, happy and ready to learn. Mobile phones can be useful for some children travelling to and from school, but they can also distract from learning and socialising. Smartwatches are not permitted in school.
Who Can Bring a Mobile Phone?
Only pupils in Years 5 and 6 may bring a mobile phone to school, and only if their parents feel it is necessary.
Our Rules
✅ Bring your phone to school only if you need it for travelling to or from school.
✅ As soon as you arrive at school, take your phone directly to the school office.
✅ Your phone must be switched off, not just on silent mode.
✅ Office staff will store your phone safely during the school day.
✅ You may collect your phone from the office at the end of the school day.
✅ Your phone must remain switched off until you have left the school grounds.
Mobile Phones Must Not Be Used
❌ In classrooms
❌ During lessons
❌ At playtime or lunchtime
❌ In toilets or changing areas
❌ Anywhere on the school site
Why Do We Have These Rules?
Having a mobile phone-free school helps us to:
- Concentrate on learning
- Make friends and play together
- Keep everyone safe
- Protect people's privacy
- Prevent distractions and disagreements
- Enjoy a calm and positive school environment
If You Forget the Rules
If a pupil uses a mobile phone on the school site, does not hand it into the office, or does not follow this policy:
- The phone may be confiscated by a member of staff.
- Parents may be contacted.
- The pupil may lose permission to bring a phone to school.
Exceptions
Some pupils may need access to a mobile phone for medical, safeguarding or other exceptional reasons. These arrangements will be agreed between the school and parents on an individual basis.
