Modern Foreign Languages
Here at Wheatfield, we love languages! We know the importance of developing opportunities to speak a second language and the doors they can open in the future.
Intent
Wheatfield Primary School's aim is that all pupils will develop a genuine interest and positive curiosity about foreign languages, predominantly Spanish.. Learning a second language will offer pupils the opportunity to explore relationships between language and identity, develop a deeper understanding of other cultures and the world around them with a better awareness of self, key individuals and cultural differences. The intention is that pupils will feel able and encouraged to continue studying languages beyond Key Stage 2 and ultimately be working towards becoming life-long language learners. Children will speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity.
Implementation
The National Curriculum states that ‘a high quality language education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries. ’. For this reason, at Wheatfield Primary School our primary language is Spanish. Currently YR R-3 have Spanish lessons while YR 4-6 are still taught French due to them already accessing this language previously. We are in this transition period over the next 3 years.
Lessons are taught on a weekly basis as part of our regular timetable. YR R to 2 are introduced to the Spanish language through songs, rhymes and stories while YR 3 onwards are taught through a carefully sequenced set of lessons that focus on the 4 core skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Impact
Pupils will develop their knowledge and understanding of the phonology, grammatical structures and vocabulary of the language and the skills that the pupils develop will provide them with a foundation for learning further languages at KS3 and beyond.
BBC Bitesize is a great website to practice the vocabulary we are learning in school:
